He works for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. She is a Major in the US Air Force stationed in England. Thats where they met and thats where they planned their Illinois wedding from! They didn't come to the states till a week before the wedding, thats when I finally was able to meet them for the first time. The weather leading up to their wedding was gorgeous! Then... It rained their entire wedding day!

That didn't bother them one bit though, they were in love and getting Married! Their wedding turned out beautiful and with few quickly placed speed-lights the rain actually became a wonderful welcome to the photos!

I am so happy with the results, when ever it rains on a photo shoot (esp a wedding!) its always a scary undertaking. All previous photo ideas are thrown to the side and rewritten. One of my mentors once told me, "a photographer's biggest job is problem-solving." This situation couldn't of made that statement more true.

Thank you Fran and Jon for being such great sports about the rain and trusting me with your precious memories!

Wedding Season and Spring is Blooming New Photography Projects!

It's a very exciting time over here at Doug Holcomb Photography! First and foremost, Its WEDDING SEASON! We're running specials on custom wedding photography packages. That means Wedding packages designed just for you, created to maximize coverage for the big day.

Next up is a new project that is being conceived for all the talented dancers and art enthusiasts!

It's coming too soon to expose all the wonderful details of what will be offered but be sure that soon you find amazing photographs and opportunities to be featured!

A Continuation of a series, representing the writing of Truman Capote's, In Cold Blood.

Imagery loosely taken from chapter III, Answer. Perry Edward Smith was captured and held separate from his accomplice, in the Women's cell that was located in the Sherif's family's living area.

Spring Luncheon 2010

I was asked, by a friend, to capture the people and happenings of a charity event she was hosting. After accepting, she then told me it was for almost strictly for women... a couple hundred women. Possibly the toughest subjects to photograph aside from bigfoot or the loch ness monstser. Even so, I was still excited to help her out.

The luncheon turned out wonderful, everyone was incredibly nice, everyone had fun, raised an astounding amount of money for WIN (Women In Need), and guest speaker, Marilyn Miglin; who's story could inspire just about anyone.

In Cold Blood

My newest pet project is an Artistic Interpretation of Truman Capote's "In cold Blood" all the details of the series are not set yet; I still need to find my cast, and decide if I should shoot a "highlight" series or dive as deep into detail as Capote did when writing it. Needless to say I'm very excited and I cant wait to hear any comments or criticisms or ideas!
Below is the very first of the series, The Clutter Family Farm. Proudly built by Herbert William Clutter. He was a hard working man of great morals and was adored by the community. As people passed the farm (though rare), they would always have positive mentions.

I chose to portray the farm as an overexposed almost ghostly scene way off in the distance, to emphasize the tragedy that occurred here. It was my goal to keep the color in the farm to show that Mr. Clutter always kept the farm in pristine shape.

Charity Auction

I have been asked to donate a print to be auctioned off to benefit a local charity, don't really know what to select. So far this these are my picks, all very different styles from each other. Anyone have any suggestions? What would you most like on your wall? You can look to my portfolio page or my Flickr. I think I'm going to have it 16x24 gallery wrapped, but I'll have to see how much time I have to get everything together. Thanks for any input!!!

Photo's, Music and Beer Oh MY!

Last Saturday The Prairie Surfers (the band my dad is in) had a gig at the Ballydoyle Pub I was asked to take pictures for their website. I thought photography, music, beer and good company? I’ll do it! This proved to be a difficult shoot, it was very crowded and very dark. I had to shoot at a ridiculous ISO setting and such slow shutter speeds I was worried they would look like a black room filled with sand, that is to say very grainy. Yes, they turned out grainy, and slightly blurry, but they look cool! They have a raw edge that I really enjoy.
In short, it was a fun night with unexpected results.

New Years Eve Fun

This past New Years Eve Monica and I helped throw a small gathering for some friends. It was hosted at our friend Tasha's Home. It was her first and last New Years Eve celebration with all of her friends in this home, she's soon moving away. Monica planned and cooked all the delicious food. The most tender chicken ever, Pasta, cocktail weenies, asparagus (I cooked that one!) cookies, the works. (She'll probably yell at me for missing something or calling something wrong so look for updates). We also thought it would be fun to do photo shoots throughout the night. This means I get to eat, drink, hang out with friends AND play with my camera and lights!! I tried to keep the photo equipment as unobtrusive as possible (and safe from the drunkeness!) so I just set up two AB800's in two corners of the room to boost the ambient on an as-needed basis. Turned out great! I was able to capture the very fast moving group from any angle. Lots of fun, not much time to set up, well worth the 7 am teardown.

New Year Resolutions...

First and foremost is to focus on the business of Photography. This is just as important if not more important than taking a pretty picture!!

Second would be to make sure I keep shooting, even when not on assignment, just keep shooting. It keeps your eye sharp and keeps the creative juices flowing.

I still cant get over how good it feels to get paid for doing something your passionate about. Having someone like your work enough to pay for it is extremely flattering as well. Joffrey Ballet

I have been asked to be one of two photographers at the Joffrey Ballet Family Dinner, held between the two shows on December 12th. The other photographer is the talented Jason Smith. The style of shoot is pretty similar to the jobs I did last summer for Roots Studios, but this time I get to have more creative freedom and do things MY way! I don't think I've been this excited for a shoot ever!

Don't go far, Dec 12th is fast approaching and I most certainly will have updates.

Time to start blogging again, things have been getting busier!

Monica and I photographed Cheryl and Tony's Wedding awhile back. It was a gorgeous wedding, wonderful family and a great time for all involved. This was the first wedding we were hired to shoot so there was a of learning and I thank Cheryl trusting us with her memories! All kinks aside, the photos turned out nicely.

Frank and Amy were the next to ask me to photograph their marriage. This was a very quaint wedding, family only. It only called for one photographer, so I went it alone. Beautiful sunny day, could not of been nicer. Congratulations Frank and Amy! and thank you for letting me be a part of it all!

The images are coming along nicely for the first batch of T-shirts. Printing has not yet begun but will be soon. In the mean time here is a sneak peak of one of the images that will be screened! This image will be screened off center at the bottom of the shirt... also I've been thinking of maybe screening some bags while I'm at it...

Here it goes everyone! I'm very excited about this! I've selected a handful of my favorite pictures and am going to Screen Print them under The Basement Press Name onto posters and T-shirts. In the beginning the selection of colors will be small but the sizes will range hopefully from XS through XL. They will be for sale on my Etsy site.

Keep checking in there is a lot on my mind for the future!

Maureen & Eric

Okay I know this should of been posted a while ago now, but I've been swamped with work, school and getting this blog running smoothly.

My cousin Maureen and her fiance Eric were married this August and I of course brought along my camera to document the affair. It was an absolutely wonderful wedding, the setting, the people the food; all of it equally wonderful. So with that said I had it kind of easy that day, all I had to do was nail down my exposures and fire away. I am quite pleased with the results and I've just recently delivered my images to the Bride and Groom and they could not be happier either. That put a huge smile on my face!

Thank you for visiting my still very humble and incomplete blog. If you stumbled on this blog by accident, it is a photography blog to both showcase my work and offer my services to people such as yourself. Please revisit soon as there will be much more to read and do next time....this is still the very beginning and there will be a lot of additions and changes in the coming days.
